You’ve decided to start a blog but thinking of a name can stop you before you even get started. I know for all my businesses, brands and blogs the name has often been a tough decision.
In today’s video, I am sharing my thoughts and tips on how to name your blog. Watch here:
When planning your blog, there are two ways you can name your blog – Either using your own name or thinking of something which is more of a “brand” name. I don’t believe there is a right answer but you do need to find what works best for you.
Using Your Name:
Creating a brand under your own name can really create a personal brand, something which is very on trend at the moment and you are the face of the brand.
Using your own name for your blog can make it easy for people to find you online and easily find your blog. If you have a slightly unusual name you might also find you can buy the domain name and still get the social media handles.

Finding Another Name:
Using a “brand” name for your blog gives it room to grow, especially if you envision bringing contributors onboard. Although that’s not to say you can’t do this with your own name – Some of the biggest fashion, beauty brands and travel blogs are all named after their founders.
You can still add the personal element into your brand if you use another name, although you might need to do more introduction posts so people are clear who you ate.
It can also be a good way to stand out with a fun and unusual brand name, this can also mean your brand and blog becomes known first, before you.

For me, I began with a blog with my name in it, “Conversations with Caroline” but then transitioned my blog and brand to The Content Edit. So I have done both!
The first place to start when picking a name is a website which lets you know if the names are available for both the domain and the social media handles. I like to use checkr.com as a starting point.
To think of the name for The Content Edit, I came up with lots of ideas, shared them with others, brainstormed and asked friends to help me with the final name. This might be something you want to do too.
One thing is once you’ve picked a name, you don’t have to be stuck with it. If you change your mind down the line you can always pivot, like I did.

As I said, there is no right name either your own or something else. My best advice though is to not overthink it and pick something you will be happy to share with others! Click here to watch the video where I share some tips and ideas on picking the name for your blog.
