CELEBRATING INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES
By Caroline Towers
I’m a huge advocate for Indie businesses, in fact, I run two of my own online. To help support and raise awareness for bricks and mortar businesses on the high street, July 4th, known as Independence Day in the USA has now become Independents Days here in the UK.
Independents Day of #indiedayuk is an initiative to remind us all how many incredible businesses there are on our high streets. Not only that but it’s there to encourage us all to shop from these businesses when we can.
I started work in an Independent shop (Pennine Cycles) when I was 14. It is owned by mum and step-dad so not did I only get to experience what it’s like working in a business I saw the behind the scenes effort it takes.

Independents in Leeds Corn Exchange

On Indie Day I was invited to Leeds Corn Exchange to visit some of the fabulous businesses which have opened up. I remember going to the Corn Exchange when I was younger and at one point there was a nightclub in there but things have come along way since then.

Built in 1863, the Corn Exchange is now home to lots of small and unique businesses. On the day I was invited we visited 5 of these shops plus we had a yummy hummus bowl from Humpit! Keil was very jealous about this as he’d seen their food on Instagram and is desperate to go!

As this was a PR event, I went with other local bloggers to visit the businesses. We were introduced to The Great Yorkshire Shop, Fabrikk, Eyekit, The Plant Point and Simcha Gallery.

Each of these businesses are all unique and doing awesome things in their own niche.

Next time you’re in Leeds I’d highly recommend visiting the Corn Exchange, there are some more exciting things in the pipeline too!

This is also a reminder to think about any indie businesses you can support, not only in July but throughout the year. Independent businesses are more likely to invest back into their communities. These businesses need your support, so next time you’re out and about see what indies businesses are in your area.
